Memorial of the Social Democratic Labour Party

The simple facade of house No. 57 in the Marienstraße gives little indication that events of the greatest significance took place behind it. In 1869, the founding congress was opened here. Today, the building houses a memorial and the seat of the August-Bebel Society.

Eisenach is home to one of the most important sites in the history of German Social Democracy: on 7 August 1869, the restaurant "Zum Goldenen Löwen" was the venue for the founding congress of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) under the leadership of August Bebel and Wilhelm Liebknecht. As mentioned, the opening of the founding congress took place in this building. The actual foundation took place at the hotel "Zum Mohren" on the next day.

Until today, it is still considered to be the cradle of German social democracy. It is the concern of the August-Bebel Society to preserve the tradition of the memorial site, to make it accessible to a broad public and to contribute to political education by means of events, seminars and readings.
