Carthusian Garden and the Foyer
The "Kartausgarten" refers to the former garden of the Carthusian monks’ monastery and the "Wandelhalle". After the Monastery raids in 1525, after usage among other things as an orphanage and penitentiary, the Wandelhalle was inaugurated in 1906 as the spa hall of the planned Eisenach spa. Today the Wandelhalle is available for cultural events.
In the 14th century Carthusian monks from Erfurt came to Eisenach. Their monastery disappeared during the monastery raids in 1525.
The graceful landscape, the rich culture, the good transport connections, and a modern hotel industry gave rise to lofty plans at the beginning of the 20th century: Eisenach was to become a spa town. The Wandelhalle, designed by the Dresden architect Johannes Bollert, was inaugurated in 1906. The healing waters came from Wilhelmsglücksbrunn. The project was not crowned with lasting success - spa operations had to be discontinued in 1938.
After the German-German Reunification, the founding of the Wandelhalle Foundation provided possibilities for a comprehensive renovation, and usage for garden exhibitions, concerts, and wine and summer festivals. In the adjacent landscape park enchantment awaits with exotic and rare trees and plants.
In the Tea Room of the classicist Gardner’s House, precious French wallpapers with motifs of the ancient fairy tale "Cupid and Psyche" are on display.
