A retreat for residents and guests: Prinzenteich

The 210 m long and approx. 45 m wide Prinzenteich is located in the south of the city below the Marienhöhe villa colony on the B19. Today it is a popular destination for Eisenach residents and their guests, with a restaurant, café and boat hire.

A fire-fighting water pond was built on the area of the former swampy goose meadow from 1854 onwards. The Duchess Helene von Orleans, who was popular and committed in Eisenach, donated money for this project. Who was the Duchess of Orleans? Born in Ludwigslust, she married the heir to the French throne, Philippe de Orleans. When he died in an accident, she remained unsuccessful in the succession dispute for her son, left her homeland and from then on lived in exile in Eisenach. Her sons - the princes - enjoyed skating on the newly created pond, which gave rise to the name Prinzenteich.

Today, a circular promenade invites visitors to take a short walk and observe the Swan Island. Rowing on the pond is one of the pleasures of the Prinzenteich in summer, as is ice skating in winter.
